Why Is My Check Engine Light On? A Midland Mechanic Explains

Introduction

You are heading down Great Eastern Highway on the way to work when a small orange engine symbol appears on the dashboard. Nothing feels different. The car drives fine. So do you keep going, or do you pull over?

It is one of the most common questions we get asked at our Midland workshop, and the honest answer is that the light on its own does not tell you much. What it does tell you is that your car has noticed something it wants looked at. Here is what that means in plain English.

What the check engine light actually means

Your car constantly monitors itself through a network of sensors. When one of those sensors reports a reading outside the expected range, the engine computer stores a fault code and switches on the check engine light.

Think of it like a smoke alarm. It tells you something is not right, but it does not tell you whether you have burnt the toast or the kitchen is on fire. Working out which one you are dealing with is the job of a proper vehicle diagnostic.

Solid light or flashing light? The difference matters

This is the most useful thing most drivers do not know.

A steady orange light

A steady light generally means a fault has been logged but the car is not in immediate danger. You can usually drive on carefully and book the car in within the next few days. Do not ignore it for weeks, though, because small faults left alone often turn into expensive ones.

A flashing light

A flashing check engine light is a different story. It usually points to an engine misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, which is one of the pricier components under your car. If the light is flashing, ease off the accelerator, avoid heavy loads or towing, and get the vehicle looked at as soon as you safely can.

Common reasons the check engine light comes on

Every car is different, but these are the causes we see most often at our Midland workshop.

  • A loose or faulty fuel cap. It sounds too simple, but a cap that has not clicked shut lets fuel vapour escape and the car detects it. Tighten it, and the light may clear after a few drives.
  • Oxygen or air flow sensor faults. These sensors help the engine balance fuel and air. When they drift out of range you will often notice rougher idling and more fuel use and black soot on takeoff, which adds up quickly for anyone commuting from the eastern suburbs into the city each day.
  • Worn spark plugs or ignition coils. These cause misfires, hesitation and that flashing light we mentioned earlier.
  • Catalytic converter problems. Often the downstream result of a misfire that was left too long. Spark plugs or coils malfunctioning can cause the engine to use more fuel, this produces more soot in the exhaust gas & can block up exhaust components ie, EGR valves, DPF filters etc. Leading to very expensive repairs.
  • Battery and charging faults. A tired car battery or alternator can throw up warning lights that look unrelated to the actual problem. Perth summers are hard on batteries, and we see plenty of them fail without warning. Cold weather can also kill a battery. A vehicle with the stop / start function (think the cars that turn off at the lights & restart when you go to take off) must have a decent battery. Once a vehicle’s battery gets below 80%, this feature can cause problems with the way the vehicle runs. An obvious sign that the battery needs replacing is that it engine doesn’t stop at the lights anymore.

Why a code reader on its own is not the answer

Plug in a cheap scanner and you will get a code. What you will not get is the reason behind it. A code that names a particular sensor does not necessarily mean that sensor has failed. It might be wiring, a vacuum leak, or a fault somewhere else entirely that is making a perfectly good sensor report odd numbers.

Replacing parts based on a code alone is how people end up paying twice. Proper diagnosis means testing, measuring and confirming the cause before anything gets replaced. This will save you money in the long run.
